No. 1 Polsloe Cafe, Exeter

No.1 Polsloe Cafe, Exeter

This place is a gem and situated a stones throw from the throng of Exeter’s city centre. A small independently run cafe with a cool vibe and buzzing atmosphere. Rebecca Alford, the owner has been at the helm for a year or so and from what I can see the cafe has gone from strength to strength. The decor is eclectic. Colourful flowers hang from the ceiling, local artists display their work and their green plants on every available windowsill and surface.

Serving simple yet hearty food to students and locals alike, you will struggle to find a table in this busy cafe. I can’t tell you how many times I have popped up for a coffee or some pancakes and haven’t been able to get in through the door! That’s why on this particular visit I booked. I needed to be guaranteed a table so I could sit down and sample the breakfast menu. Served all day may I add!

I had my heart set on the breakfast special of smooshed up avocado with lime and chilli served on chunky white or granary toast with poached eggs. Steve found it harder to choose. He couldn’t decide on pancakes or the full English. At one point he contemplated both! Thankfully his eyes weren’t bigger than his belly and he opted for the full English. Eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato and mushrooms served up with a slice of doorstop toast. So good, and a great start to the day.

Other choices include crumpets with jam or pancakes with banana and maple syrup for those of you who want something a little sweeter to start your day. I think every other customer in No 1 Polsloe was digging into the pancake stacks and I really need to go back to sample them for myself. They are obviously pretty darn fine.
