The Flat, Exeter

The newest independant eatery to open in Exeter is a pizza lovers dream. Situated on Fore Street, it nestles amongst some of the finest stores and cafes in the city.

Steve and I ventured out on a steamy Friday evening and took the short walk from our house. We were by Chloe Whipple (the owner) and shown to our seats. We perused the menu to make our choices. All the pizzas are handmade in store, vegetarian or vegan with gluten free options available. There are also pasta and salad options available for those of you that fancy something different.

Steve and I ordered a bottle of Sicilian Nero D’avola to go alongside plump, juicy olives and some salted almonds.

After some discussion we decided on two pizzas that we could go halves on. The choice was too much. Everything sounded so good! We opted for the ‘Salty’; topped with sun dried tomatoes, capers, fresh chilli and Parmesan plus the ‘Smoked’ which was topped with smoked halloumi, mushrooms and red onion chutney. Both delicious and generously topped. To have alongside we ordered the house salad.

Whilst waiting for our pizzas to arrive we took a moment to take in the atmosphere. Full to the brim with like minded pizza lovers. The atmosphere was buzzing. I noticed Italian voices on the tables either side of us which surely had to be a good sign. Italians are very proud of their food and will only eat Italian cuisine outside of their country if it’s exceptional. High praise indeed!

I had been before and knew what to expect but it was Steve’s first visit. He was a little sceptical about the flavours as he loves a fishy topped pizza generally but on hearing the Italian voices in the background he came around to the idea of a vegetarian pizza restaurant.

Our pizzas arrived and we tucked in. Both pizzas were cooked beautifully. The bases were thin and crispy with generous toppings. It all felt very authentic I have to say. We both devoured everything and our plates were left clean.

Desserts are simple at The Flat. Booja Booja ice cream or Sorbetto. A lemony cold drink/sorbet that is the perfect end to a pizza meal. If you fancy something sweet then this is light enough to squeeze in!

You can find The Flat at 142, Fore Street, Exeter, EX4 3AN.
