I was excited to see that Exeter finally has a true Italian style geleteria. Caramello Gelato opened its doors to the public this week. Situated at the bottom of South Street just a few moments walk from the cathedral and the historic quayside.
A traditional European style geleteria reminiscent of holidays abroad. I am super excited that we finally have a real geleteria in Exeter after all the years that I have lived here. Lots of delicious ice creams, sorbets and toppings for you to choose from. You can have a cone, a cup or make into extravagent sundaes. Their menu also includes panini, hot drinks, waffles and pancakes. If you’re feeling particularly hungry for ice cream and waffles and in a group then you could even go for “The Special” at £35.00! 4 waffles topped with a scoop of every flavour of ice cream, nuts, cream and fruit.. The list goes on! I can’t wait to see what that looks like…
Steve and I perused the flavours and made our choices. I went for a waffle cone with two scoops. I always enjoy nutty flavours so I had a scoop of pistachio and one of hazelnut. Steve went for a medium cup with two scoops. Chocolate plus strawberry cheesecake. My only criticism is that although it is traditional in every sense and reminiscent of many geleteria I have visited, I felt the use of an ice cream scoop a little “British”. If there is one thing I know about geleteria’s abroad is that they would never have such a measuring tool for ice cream. They layer the ice cream up with a spatula type device and portion control goes out the window. I was expecting a little more of this if I am honest. Only because everything else is so “on point”.
Caramello Gelato is open 9am – 10pm Sunday – Thursday and 9am – 11pm Friday and Saturday.
Pop down and give them a visit and let me know what you think.
