I wanted to highlight a few places I have been loving this month. All are very different but with a common ground. They all provide me with delicious baked yumminess and top-notch friendly service.
Between Bread, Exeter
The first on my list is Between Bread on North Street, Exeter. Between Bread had only been open since the beginning of June but has created a solid clientele in that time looking to get their hands on their amazing-filled sandwiches, homemade cakes and coffee. Owned by Edd Malloy and Russell Courtney, this duo have become the go-to place for your sandwich fix. They tell me “they are very proud of their focaccia. It’s baked fresh every morning and makes a fantastic vehicle for the exciting things we like to put in our sandwiches”. They create interesting flavour combinations for their fillings and cover all bases with Korean fried cauliflower and kimchi to slightly more than classic grilled cheese. There is always a queue when I go, so if you are craving something in particular, go early! As perhaps the only indie eatery in Exeter that opens at 7.30 am you can get your pre-work coffee and breakfast fix too.
Arrietty, Exeter
Arrietty on Longbrook Street is another newbie only being opened a few weeks but has become a firm favourite of mine. Owned by Zoe Beardshall and Samantha Pounds this cute coffee shop offers home-baked cookies as a speciality, the signature Harry’s brownie which was developed by Sam in Arrietty’s big brother Harry’s just up the road as well as glorious coffee from Origin and ever-changing grilled cheese sandwiches. They plan on launching a brunch menu very soon taking inspiration from the ever-popular brunches served at Harry’s. Think avocado on rye, buttermilk waffles, shakshuka and yoghurt with homemade granola.
They have plenty of seating for those wanting to sit down and savour the atmosphere and despite it being a stone’s throw from Exeter’s High Street it still manages to create an oasis of calm. They also have a retail space at the front of the store where you can pick up local flowers from Stowford Flowers as well as edible and non-edible gifting.
They plan on hosting various events in their welcoming space with the first being a yoga brunch and later plans for a sustainable pre-loved clothing sale.
The Folly at The Pig at Combe
The Folly at The Pig at Combe is a calm oasis serving up wood-fired oven flatbreads with seasonal toppings made a stone’s throw from where you sit. The ingredients for these as well as their salads are sourced from the walled kitchen garden just behind. The menu is small but reflects the ingredients in season which I adore.
The kitchen is open come rain or shine and there is a log-burning stove for chillier days. Dogs are welcome too which is great particularly if you have taken a walk in the beautiful countryside nearby.
There are tables outside where you can soak up the last of the summer sunshine beneath stunning parasols whilst enjoying a glass of English fizz and one of their seasonal flatbreads. A wonderful way to while away an afternoon.
We ordered wood oven flatbreads, one with heritage tomatoes and oregano and one with golden beetroot, garden greens and chive crème fraîche and enjoyed them alongside a delicious pickled garden slaw and potato salad.
If you don’t fancy a wood oven flatbread, although I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t, there are some small plates and The PIG at Combe iconic piggy bits on offer. Think home-cured meats, homemade dips, salads and the like. All light and suitable for my favourite style of dining – sharing!
Desserts are simple, seasonal and delicious. We shared a chocolate pudding with sweet redcurrants alongside coffee whilst we soaked up the last of the afternoon sunshine.
The PIG at Combe is one of my favourite spots locally and now I can add The Folly to the list.
If you fancy trying The PIG for yourself why not head over for their big Party on Sunday 17th September from 1pm -8pm where you can celebrate the best in live music, delicious local food and the superb views and gardens. The perfect opportunity to experience the joys of The PIG at Combe.
