P A R M E S A N T A H I N I K A L E S A L A D P A R M E S A N T A H I N I K A L E S A L A D Make sure you watch to the end because my face says it all… When autumn cravings meet summer freshness, you get this Parmesan tahini kale salad. It’s tossed with toasted crunchy chickpeas and coated in the most unctuous, creamy dressing that blends rich Parmesan with silky tahini. A salad that’s hearty enough for cooler days but still vibrant and fresh. Proof that salad season doesn’t end with summer.

Serves 4
For the salad:
1 can chickpeas, drained and patted dry
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp paprika
Salt and pepper
1/4 cup pine nuts
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
250g kale (mix of cavolo nero and curly kale works well)
1 avocado, sliced

For the dressing:
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1 clove garlic, grated
1/2 cup Parmesan
Water to loosen

Method:

Preheat oven to 180°C. Toss the chickpeas in 2 tbsp olive oil, paprika, salt and pepper on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, shake, then bake another 10 minutes until crisp.

Toast the pine nuts in a frying pan until golden.

Add kale and Parmesan to a large bowl.

Blend all dressing ingredients until smooth, adding about 1/4 cup water (more if needed) to loosen. Season to taste.

Pour about two-thirds of the dressing over the kale and massage with clean hands to soften. Transfer to a serving platter, top with chickpeas, pine nuts and sliced avocado. Finish with an extra grating of Parmesan and the remaining dressing on the side.

When we bought this place back in 2020, we knew we had apple trees, but we never imagined they’d kick off a whole craft cider adventure.

Five years on, we’re still out here picking, pressing, fermenting, and bottling with whatever we’ve got to hand - including that little press I got Steve for his birthday in 2020. It’s way too small, but it’s part of the story now.

Every harvest teaches us something new, and this year… everything just came together. The apples, the process, the patience - it’s all in the bottle.

It’s become our tradition to open the last bottle of last year’s cider on bottling day - a small toast to how far we’ve come, and everything we’ve learned along the way.

Here’s to our 2025 vintage - crisp, fresh, homegrown, and made with love.

ad You know those weekends that just click? Good friends, laughter, and a table that slowly fills with food and wine.

Last weekend I put together a simple cheese board with a yummy selection from @cornishcheeseco - their new Dozmary Camembert-style, a bold mature cheddar, and that dreamy Cornish Blue that we all know and love.

Then came the figs, grapes, seasonal berries, a handful of nuts, homemade plum chutney (made from our own plums) and a few oatcakes for good measure. You have to have different colours and textures in a cheeseboard don’t you? Each bite is different that way.

And to serve alongside, a chilled bottle of @lymebaywine Shoreline. Crisp, citrusy, and perfectly balanced - it cuts through the creamy cheeses and makes every bite better than the last.

Simple, local, and totally delicious - the kind of evening that makes you say, “we need to do this more often!”.. It’s definitely time to get the next date night in the diary.

Last weekend I went to the autumn Sloe Supper at Park Cafe in Heavitree hosted by the lovely folks from Sloe Bakery Exeter. It was their second supper club, and you could feel how much love went into it. The menu was full of cosy, seasonal things: jammy figs and blue cheese, pumpkin and yogurt, corn tortellini in brown butter, then beef shin or lentil and mushroom ragu, and the dreamiest apple galette with malt ice cream.

Everything was locally sourced, with a little menu card sharing where each ingredient came from - such a nice touch. You know I am all about food provenance. The room was packed and full of familiar faces, (hey Jo, hey Polly👋🏻) which gave it that proper Exeter food community energy. Definitely one of those evenings that makes you glad you said yes to going out on a blustery autumn night. 🍂

Hidden Gem in Barcelona ✨

While exploring the El Born district, Steve and I discovered what might be the best bar in Barcelona and trust me, it feels like a true local secret.

Think cozy vibes, amazing wine and craft beer, laid-back music you can actually chat over, and the kind of warm, welcoming staff that make you feel at home instantly.

If you’re looking for an authentic Barcelona bar experience away from the tourist crowds, this is the spot you’ll still be dreaming about after your trip. (But let’s keep it between us! I still need a seat at the bar when I return 😉).

Ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes on tour?

I found out this weekend in Barcelona. Instead of just turning up for the gig like I usually do, I got to dip into a little bit of the band tour life and it’s a whole different world.

From soundchecks and backstage planning to last-minute nerves, the build-up really is its own show.

We kicked things off at La Carpa, Poble Espanyol for a sold-out @beprogmyfriend event - an incredible progressive rock concert in Spain. The energy in the crowd was unbelievable, and watching the crew at work made me realise how much goes into making it all happen before a single note is played.

The day went something like this:

• Picked up and driven to the venue (chauffeur life 🙌🏻)
• Watched the soundcheck
• Afternoon free for wandering. We walked miles from the Be Prog stage all the way to the beach for ice cream
• Lunch stop at La Colmena, an old favourite (amazing Barcelona bakery)
• Coffee fix at @primate.bakehouse - highly recommend
• Back to the venue to prepare
• Signing session - a huge queue, which I happily observed from a safe distance
• Downtime before the 10 pm show
• The show itself - an absolute storm of energy on stage and in the crowd. Amazing!
• Midnight finish, then whisked off to the hotel while the band celebrated with a local beer and the crew packed down like pros

One of the highlights was just being behind the scenes: spending time with the band and crew, sharing a “band supper” (the food was questionable, but the memory wasn’t), and seeing exactly what it takes to put together such a brilliant night of live music in Barcelona.

Being part of the build-up, then watching it all explode on stage, was something really special. Huge thanks to @thepineapplethief for letting me tag along.

That’s not entirely true… I’m actually very trustworthy. I just wanted your attention.

The truth is, I just can’t be trusted around certain things. Hand me an overpriced iced matcha latte and I’ll happily ignore the cost of living crisis. Put me in a boujie coffee shop and I’m suddenly ordering like I’ve got a loyalty card for life. Add a kitten into the mix and you’ll never see me leave. (Cats & kittens might be my ultimate weakness)

Pastries mysteriously disappear in my presence, posh snacks don’t stand a chance, and salty snacks with allioli? Game over.

Vintage stores feel like treasure hunts and don’t even get me started on my obsession with homewares. I could probably justify buying another serving platter I don’t strictly need.

Basically, snacks, vintage finds, and kittens noses are my kryptonite.

So tell me … what’s your ultimate can’t-be-trusted-around weakness?

This month was such a mix - the kind that reminds me why I love being self-employed (and also why it’s a little terrifying sometimes).

Highs included: nurturing friendships old + new, a whirlwind trip to Barcelona to see Steve play a sell out show, snuffling donuts from Sloe Bakery (for a good cause 💛), and filling my freezer with foraged blackberries. I also went to my first ever stadium rugby match (SA vs NZ, World Cup in my hometown 🤯), explored Budleigh at the literary fest, danced through new adult ballet classes , and even blagged my way into a rooftop bar in Barcelona with unreal views .

I loved revisiting old haunts with Steve, sipping wine in Somerset at harvest time, and continuing to create content for two amazing indie businesses here in Exeter. Feeling grateful.

The low? The rollercoaster that is self-employed life. I wouldn’t trade it, but financial insecurity is definitely the not-so-fun side. Holiday pay would be oh so great - I guess that’s my cue to get more social media work.. 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’m here if you need me!

Forget the museums for a moment - my real cultural obsession on holiday? The local supermarket.

First thing I do (bags down, quick hotel room explore) is find the nearest shop: a bottle of cheap but delicious wine, a bag of local crisps, and a nosey through the aisles. Multicoloured popcorn? Mind blown. Ready-pulped tomato for DIY hotel room pan con tomate? Game changer.

You honestly learn more about people’s customs and habits here than in any guidebook. It’s heaven to me.

Who else loves a supermarket wander abroad? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏿🙋🏻‍♂️

It definitely doesn’t pop up in my head as something to use like it did a decade ago that’s for sure. When I’m travelling, I’d much rather ask a friend or scroll Insta for recs. And since you’re here, I guess that makes me the friend. hey! 👋🏻

So, coffee people, listen up. I found this gem in Barcelona called @morrowcoffee .They’ve got two spots in the city, but I went to the one near Plaça d’Espanya. Proper good coffee, vibey atmosphere, cakes that you definitely don’t want to share (although I did - my bad!), and it’s dog friendly. I ended up giving a little crumb hoover all the attention while I sipped away.

If you’re on the hunt for the best coffee in Barcelona, stick this one on your list. You can thank me later.

POV: Staying in the non-glamorous free digs miles out of town (band-WAG perks 🤷‍♀️) … and somehow blagging my way into Barcelona’s most in-demand rooftop for budget friendly drinks and front row views of La Sagrada Familia.

600 people a day try (and fail) to get up here without a booking. Me? Accidentally Beyoncé’d my way in by dropping “I’m at a sister hotel” 💅✨ (it’s true - I didn’t fib)

Not the fanciest rooftop, but probably the best €7 I’ve ever spent. (A small price to pay for these views and unlimited time) Cold Spanish wine. Iconic basilica views. Zero regrets.

Jealousy - sometimes people notice something they wish they had and it comes out as judgement instead of appreciation.

Insecurities - when someone feels uncertain about themselves it can feel easier to deflect that rather than look forward.

Comparison - we often measure ourselves against others and that can slip judgement

Lack of understanding - judgement can be a quick reaction to unfamiliarity

Seeking reassurance - judgement can give someone a momentary sense of comfort and control

Miscommunication - without context people may jump to conclusions instead of taking time to understand

✨ New in Exeter! ✨

I’ve long been a fan of Folk Interiors in Totnes, so imagine my delight when I discovered they’ve opened a bigger and even more beautiful store right here on Cathedral Green.

From the moment you walk in and swirl up the staircase, it’s a treasure trove of soft furnishings, furniture, gifts… and (my weakness!) the most gorgeous kitchenware.

Think: elegant wine glasses, colourful coffee cups, and terracotta crockery I instantly fell in love with. Honestly, I wanted to take it all home - and yes, I may have already started a mental Christmas list 🎄 (too soon? Never!).

A slight step away from my usual food & drink posts, but beautifully linked by the joy of gathering around the table.

This space deserves to be celebrated and discovered. So, next time you’re in Exeter, pop in and let yourself be inspired.

@budlitfest has become my September ritual. I am on year three now, and it never fails to charm. This year I caught Orlando Murrin & Janice Hallett in conversation about their brilliant new books - such a funny, engaging hour that hinted at character twists without spoiling a thing. I am VERY excited to get reading.

The festival itself winds through Budleigh, from churches to the town hall, with a buzzing hub at the Public Hall: shelves stacked by Waterstones, a Pickle Shack pop-up, and the all-important bar with three types of fizz on offer! Budleigh you spoil me! 🥂

And in true British fashion, one minute the sun was blazing and the next we were ducking a heavy downpour - rescued only by Cremant, festival chips, and a gelato detour to Marco’s (pistachio + tiramisu, obviously 🍨).

Books, food, fizz, and a little seaside rain: the cosiest kind of September day for a cosy crime lover.

A perfect day at @wraxallvineyard

ad Somerset’s oldest vineyard (celebrating 50 years) welcomed me for the launch of their brand-new Classic Cuvée, a tour through their vines, a little history lesson, and a sneak peek at their dreamy new shepherds huts with panoramic countryside views. Already planning my return stay. Who’s in?

Highlights included tasting four incredible wines with Lexa, the owner - the sparkling rosé stole my heart, pure celebration in a glass. Lunch at The View, their copper-clad restaurant aptly named for its outlook, was a feast: pillowy focaccia, anchovies, heritage tomato salad sweeter than summer, and beetroot with blackberry that felt like autumn on a plate.

From start to finish, it was perfection. Whether you’re after a night in the huts, a relaxed lunch with friends, or just a casual tasting, Wraxall will look after you beautifully. Add this vineyard to your must-visit list.

Wraxall is less than 20 minutes by taxi from Castle Cary station - so yes, more than one glass is absolutely encouraged.

N O S T R A W B E R R I E S H E R E Berry bake N O S T R A W B E R R I E S H E R E

Berry bakes are on pause, because autumn is here and with it comes the cosy flavours I wait for all year: ginger, cinnamon and clove. 🧡

These warming spices turn simple bakes into pure comfort.

Lately, I’ve been baking spiced muffins with lemon drizzle glaze. They’re soft, perfectly spiced, and that zesty lemon glaze is the bright pop that keeps you coming back for another bite. (and probably another if you are anything like me!)

It’s the ultimate autumn baking recipe. It’s seasonal, cosy and made for slow weekends.

Save this one for when you want your kitchen to smell like heaven. 🍁

Ingredients (makes 12 muffins):
½ cup unsalted butter
¾ cup dark treacle
2⅔ cups all-purpose flour (use @cotswoldflour - it’s readily available in the uk)
1½ tsp ground cinnamon
1¼ tsp ground ginger
½ tsp ground cloves
½ cup brown sugar
1 large egg, room temp
½ cup plain yogurt (or sour cream) + ½ cup milk at room temp

Lemon Glaze:
1 cup icing sugar
2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice + 1 Tbsp milk

Method
Preheat over to 220C. Line a 12 hole muffin tin with muffin cups or grease really well.

Melt butter & treacle in a pan over low heat. Leave to cool slightly when melted.

Meanwhile whisk dry ingredients in a large bowl.

Stir sugar, yoghurt and egg into cooled wet mix.

Combine wet & dry. Using a 1/3 cup measure scoop out 12 muffins.

Bake at 220C for 5 minutes before turning down to 180C for 15 minutes.

Whilst muffins are baking make the glaze by mixing icing sugar, lemon juice & milk together. Add more icing sugar for a thicker glaze.

Once cooled a little, drizzled with lemon glaze.
