It must have been about 2 years since my last Week In Pictures post. To be sure I would have to look back through my archives. Why this week of all weeks? Well, in all honesty, there is no particular reason apart from having a little more time than normal. It’s half term here in the UK which means all my children’s ballet classes that I teach have stopped for the week and I have more freedom with my time. Plus, I feel I have a few lovely pictures that I want to share that otherwise would spend their eternity on my iPhone. Yes, these are all photos taken with my iPhone camera so not always the cleanest, most thought out images but they capture the moment I happen to be in at that time beautifully. Each one a memory I will back on fondly and hold dear.
HECK! Meat-Free Sausages
I have been spending the week creating in the kitchen and taking the time to sit down with Steve both at lunch and supper to enjoy the rewards. I was lucky enough to have been sent a few PR samples by HECK! The first vegan Italia Chipolatas and the second Meat-Free & Apple Chipolatas. These plant-based sausages are the latest addition to the ever-growing and wonderful range that HECK! have to offer. As you will have seen on my Instagram page and in previous blog posts I am a huge fan of the HECK! meat-free range. There hasn’t been a time when I have been disappointed with the texture or flavour. They tick the box for vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians looking for a great meat-free alternative. They are also gluten-free, soy-free, low in saturated fats, low sugar, high fibre, high protein and Vegetarian Society approved.
Here I created a quick honey and mustard glaze for the new HECK! Meat-Free with Apple Chipolatas by mixing one heaped tablespoon of local honey and one heaped tablespoon of Dijon mustard together and adding it to the pan for the last few minutes of cooking to create a wonderfully flavoursome, sticky glaze. I then served the sausages with homemade red cabbage coleslaw and wilted organic rainbow chard.
You can find the new HECK! meat-free sausages at larger Sainsbury’s stores.
Exeter Chiefs Win The Double
It’s been quite a couple of weeks for the Exeter Chiefs. Last weekend they beat Wasps in the Premiership final and the week before that they became European champions. Both matches were celebrated with family at home with many a glass of wine, silky hats and a buffet supper.
Lunch At Harry’s
I met up with my friend Johanna at Harry’s for lunch to celebrate making it to the end of the first half term. Johanna teaches too and it’s been a long old 7 weeks of cleaning, sanitising, teaching, more cleaning and more sanitising!! But, we made it! I am so thankful for the job I do. I feel very fortunate to be able to do a job that I love. Yes, it may come with a little bit of added stress right now but I really wouldn’t want it to be any other way. The safety of my students and myself is paramount and between us, we are all doing all we can to keep our wonderful dance community alive.
Anyway, back to lunch. It was delicious as always. I don’t think I have ever had a disappointing meal at Harry’s. They always deliver the goods in my opinion and you can’t beat the atmosphere and service.
For those worried about venturing out at the moment due to Covid rest assured you can feel totally safe at Harry’s. Trust me, I was feeling apprehensive myself, but my mind was put at rest as soon as I arrived. Temperature checks are taken and hands sanitised before you enter. You wear your mask when not seated at your table and there are the prettiest partitions in place to provide more separation between tables.
A word on the food. I had the newly added wild mushroom risotto. It was a superb choice. The rice was still slightly al dente, which it should be, and coated in the most decadent wild mushroom and cheesy sauce. Seriously, if you love mushrooms you need to try this. Johanna has roast chicken with mashed potatoes and Savoy cabbage. We both were very happy with our choices. The perfect comfort food to counteract the blustery, rainy day outside.
As a treat we ordered dessert. I opted for a seasonal spiced pumpkin creme brûlée and Johanna one of Harry’s signature desserts, the baked skillet cookie with ice cream. Both seriously good and the perfect end to a really lovely catch up between two friends. Harry’s, you are the best!
No Churn Coffee Ice Cream
I know I have been rather neglectful of my blog of late and I apologise. Maybe this long overdue My Week In Pictures post will kick start things properly again? I am constantly making and creating in my kitchen but have found it hard to get things down on paper (i.e here!). I want things to look a certain way but not having access to a fancy pants camera right now has made me not want to post anything. This post has made me think I should just get over that and do my thing regardless. There will be a time when I can afford to get myself a little camera and teach myself how to take decent shots. For now, though, my 11plus iPhone will do just fine.
I created a No-Churn Coffee Ice Cream to celebrate UK Coffee Week. Click here for the recipe if you missed it.
Sunday Lunch At Circa – Exeter
I want to give a shout out to Circa in Exeter for a stupendous Sunday lunch last weekend. If you ever find yourself looking for somewhere for Sunday lunch in the city then may I suggest Circa? Book early though as they fill up fast. I had the veggie roast and my two friends the roast beef. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, the toast beef was pink and the cheesy celeriac was sublime. I would highly recommend it.
Sunny Afternoons With Friends
What can I say about these photographs that they don’t say themselves? I had the best afternoon in Sidmouth hanging out on the beach drinking tea and eating ice creams.
I discovered a florist that had a wonderful floral display that enticed me in. Whoops, A Daisy in the Market Square is simply dreamy and well worth popping your head in.
Whilst in the market square why not head to the beautifully pink Crane & Kind for a spot of retail therapy? Owned by my two friends Polly and Jemma it’s worth stopping in if you have any little people to but for. For a little more info here is a blog post from a previous visit.
Autumn Leaves And Pumpkin Spice Lattes
I have been trying to get out walking every day in and around where I live in between the rain showers. The autumnal leaves are at there peak right now. There is something about this time of year that I find magical. The only downside is the chill in the air. I am useless when cold so it’s been a good excuse to hone my pumpkin spice latte making skills at home to warm up. Recipe coming soon so watch this space!
Next week will feel very different as I am sure my British readers will understand. From Thursday we go into a month-long lockdown. From my understanding non-essential shops will not be allowed to open, restaurants and cafes are only allowed to open for takeaway and households can’t mix inside or outside in private gardens. This also means that I will be back working on Zoom full time as ballet studios, yoga studios and gyms will not be allowed to open for four weeks. Life is going to look very different for sure. Keeping positive though, we have an end date in sight where we didn’t have that before and we can meet one other person outside keeping our social distance for that much-needed face to face human interaction.
Remember that there are people out there that will need your assistance, love and support so reach out to them and show them you care. Try and shop locally, carefully and mindfully. The independent businesses were the businesses that really rallied last time and they need our support more than ever!
If you are beginning to start your Christmas shopping, online of course as non-essential shops can’t open their doors please think about putting a few pennies in the direction of your local indies. I know I will as every little helps.
In the meantime, keep well my dear friends. I shall try my utmost to post more regularly from this point on with recipes, ditties and what I get up to and enjoy so that it might keep us all entertained for 5 minutes or so! Feel free to give me a follow on Instagram if you fancy a day to day fix of Tara’s Busy Kitchen & Other Stories.
