As you will have noticed from the previous blog I have been on a little holiday to Italy. I needed to venture far afield as I leave my thirties and head into my fourties. The thought of being at work on my birthday in soggy old England turning into that dreaded decade ‘The 40’s’ made me long for a trip abroad. Anyone who knows me well will understand why Italy was my choice… I love the people, the culture, their way of life and of course the food and wine. The sunshine helps too! I had a fabulous time away and can’t wait for my next opportunity.
I missed the cats dreadfully whilst I was away so was glad to see them on my return. A huge thank you to my lovely friend Serena for being their surrogate mummy whilst I was away!
It’s a silly little thing but I purchased an orange so beautifully wrapped whilst on holiday I had to take a picture. I remember oranges being wrapped like this as a child. Makes me want to eat it.. Maybe if they wrapped all fruit in pretty paper more children would eat it?? Just a thought.
I was thrilled to receive Claire Ptak’s ‘The Violet Bakery Cookbook’ as one of my birthday presents. I can’t wait to get into Tara’s busy kitchen and try out some of the recipes.. Chocolate Devils food cake with salted caramel icing is one! Yum!
Walking back home from my ballet classes on Monday evening I passed Cakeadoodledo. A little bakery/ cake shop/ tea room near Exeter Cathedral School at the far end of Cathedral yard. It’s a lovely little place that makes the most amazing cakes on the premises by the talented Kate Shirazi. Every week i wander past the shop on my way home and always read the joke of the week. They paint them on their window for all to see. Sometimes they make me chuckle and sometimes they make me wince! This particular joke seemed very apt and it DID make me chuckle!
Tuesday night was girlie night. I have a group of friends that I have known for donkeys years and we try and get together once a month. We have a name for our evenings.. FWF… Fun With Fodder!! Normally we take it in turns to cook a three course meal with a chosen theme. One year we had countries as a theme and another year we used favourite foods. This year it has turned into a kind of celebration theme. January was burns night so haggis and whiskey was consumed. Next came pancake day.. All three courses were pancake based. Then came st Patrick’s day..Guinness based drinks , colcannon and smoked haddock with a whisky bread and butter pud to follow. The last month was celebrating St George’s day.. So lots of local produce was used from Devon. Yum! The celebration for May was my birthday so this time we decided to go out. It was all a bit last minute so popped to our local Pizza Express for a glass of fizz and some yummy pizzas. It was lovely to see the girls although one of our gang was missing.. (A shout out to Cat… She was a poorly thing.)
After dinner we decided to get coffees elsewhere.. A place called Artiagiano on The High Street in Exeter. My friend Jemma opted for a hot choccie and it had a teddy bear for decoration! It made us all chuckle!
I hope you all have a lovely fun filled week. X
