My week started with a day out with my foodie loving girlfriends Jemma, Catherine and Rebecca. I made us a light breakfast before heading down the dual carriageway towards Buckfastleigh and The Riverford Field Kitchen. We had booked a table for lunch and we were all excited about what autumnal foodie delights world await us. The weather was superb for this time of year.. The sun was shining brightly and it was incredibly mild which for me was perfect.
The lunch menu is a set three courses for £23.50. Theres no choice except the vegetarian or meat option. All the produce is fresh from the fields and you can certainly taste that.
The meat option for the day was a roast duck with lentils and my vegetarian choice was a delightfully light vegetable fritter with ginger. Both meals were served with lots of yummy veggies. I was in my element. I’ve done a full review which will be out tomorrow for you to read.
After lunch we headed to The South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh and hopped on an old steam train down to a little village on the outskirts of Totnes. With the weather being so beautiful we got to see the river Dart and its surrounding countryside in all its glory. Absolutely stunning! It was getting dark by the return journey but it was still very picturesque.
My friend Jemma sent me a rather lovely card to say she was thinking about me. I know it has been a few weeks since Miss Marple passed away but there isn’t a day that I don’t think about her. It means a lot when friends do little things that make your day a bit brighter.
Steve and I went to one of our local pubs The Oddfellows on Sunday for lunch. Steve fancied a roast and they do boast that they do “the best Sunday roast in Exeter”! He said it was very good but difficult to judge if it’s the best.. It certainly was up there in quality and price. We are rather spoilt in Exeter for good places to eat which is no bad thing let me tell you!
I met Lucy for tea and cake at Cakeadoodledo in the week. To celebrate bonfire night here in the UK they had made a firework cake which Lucy and I decided to share. A chocolate sponge with homemade rhubarb marshmallow filling covered in a sweet and rich black butter icing. The icing was covered in glitter stars and brightly coloured firework explosions.. So pretty! They had even used orange matchmaker chocolate sticks as wood for a bonfire! So clever. Well done Cakeadoodledo. I think I am still feeling the sugar high!
In the midst of our sugar high we wondered over to the farmers market where I purchased some wonderful local veggies. How wonderful and bright are the colours?
We stumbled across some fantastic bread that I can’t recommend highly enough. Made by The Almond Thief Bakery. Beautiful, light and airy sourdough that had the texture of crumpets. They have recently won “The Best Bakery” award in the Devon Life awards and judging by what I tasted at the farmers market it is well deserved! Congratulations Almond Thief Bakery! I will be returning next week to buy a loaf. I had made bread myself only the day before so didn’t need any but tried both the plain and fruity sourdough and they were dreamy.
I also met my friend Emma and her little baby Eva. We were due to walk along the river Otter. One of my favourite walks but the heavens opened and there was a torrential downpour. We decided on visiting Otterton Mill instead to get out of the rain and partake in a cup of tea.I had a wonderful cheese scone too made with Otterton Mills own ground flour and Emma had some carrot cake. She said it was delicious and delicately spiced.
Another week has been and gone. Where does the time go? It is literally flying by. I hate to say it out loud but soon it will be Christmas! Eek.. I better start getting organised.
Have a wonderful week everybody!
